From late April, ground improvement works will begin as part of the Perth Park project. This will include the installation of Controlled Modulus Columns (CMCs) in the amphitheatre mound area and the use of surcharge for the multi-use track. Construction will take place Monday to Saturday, from 7am to 7pm.

Controlled Modulus Columns (CMCs)

The installation of CMCs involves a drilling rig that creates columns in the ground. This method strengthens the ground whilst limiting the amount of soil brought to the surface. Any material brought to the surface by machinery will be disposed of offsite in accordance with environmental management plans.

Surcharge

Surcharge involves placing temporary fill on areas of the multi-use track to allow the added weight to compress and stabilise the ground. Once the ground has settled, the excess fill is removed, leaving a more stable base for the multi-use track.

The fill is sourced from material excavated during the Yanchep Rail Extension, reducing waste and supporting sustainable project practices. To manage dust, the project team will continue to use water sprays during the process of building the embankment and dust suppression once complete. Dust monitoring is in place.

Environmental management

All works will be carried out in accordance with a series of comprehensive management plans that establish the environmental management requirements for onsite construction activities. This includes procedures for identifying and managing environmental risks onsite including dust and potential contaminants. Incident response measures are also outlined should unexpected conditions be encountered.

Within the suite of management plans, the project team has developed a Contaminated Site Management Plan and Asbestos Management Plan for areas affected by subsurface contamination. These plans and all supporting environmental documentation pertaining to the investigation, remediation, validation and management of contamination at the site, are required to be reviewed by an independent Contaminated Site Auditor accredited by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation.

Comprehensive monitoring will be undertaken. Air quality monitoring units have been installed to monitor airborne particulate matter and compliance is assessed against the National Environment Protection (Ambient Air Quality) Measure (NEPM). Surface water, groundwater, hazardous ground gasses and noise will be monitored in accordance with the Management Plans.
